Things That Suck - Mary Sues, Part 4

Right, so I got sidetracked some more by Akizuki Ryo doujins and PotterSues. Back on track with the Harry Potter Sue!

FULL NAME: Allexandra Kamiah
SPECIES: Witch/itako
HAIR: Black, probably long
EYES: black
MARKINGS: Might have had a few scars from sword fights, not that they notably detracted from her appearance
POSSESSIONS: A katana, the spirit of a 200-year old samurai, I think a dog at one point...
CONNECTIONS TO CANON: Becomes Harry's guardian-type thing and follows him around the books, was at one point attracted to Snape
SPECIAL ABILITIES: Able to summon spirits, some sort of bond with Harry to let her know when he was in danger, 'Japanese' wandless magic, skills with swords

NOTES: Right, so Allex. I still use that username occasionally since I like the name, but not the character so much. She was a seventeen year old witch born in Japan, with two sisters named Allyssa and Allison. At one point, besides being a witch, she was a Sailor Senshi (I'm finding I had the annoying tendency to throw Sailor Sun/Millennium into whatever I could when I was twelve-ish), but that was scrapped after I started reading Shaman King.

She wasn't able to summon spirits, despite being an itako, because one had possessed her permanantly and was busy making snarky remarks from the back of her mind. Not that she really minded; it gave her awesome sword skills without all the annoying training. I can't remember his name at the moment, but he was a swordsman from the Meiji Era (read: Rurouni Kenshin), and was connected to my Ruroken Sue. But more on that later.

Anyways, Allex's house was destroyed and her family killed by Death Eaters when she was seventeen. Incidentally, this was at the same time Harry was seventeen, but written a little after the fourth book came out. So Harry died fighting Voldemort and as Voldy was taking over the world, Dumbledore came to send Allex back in time (no explanation how) to be Harry's bodyguard while posing as a professor of 'Japanese' wandless magic. She befriended Snape and somehow or another had a hand in the major events of books 1-4. She also had her own sort of personal villain in the form of this other crazy swordsman guy who ended up fighting her to the death in the Great Hall as part of Voldemort's attempted takeover of Hogwarts. (Still around the time Book 4 was out though.)

Later on, I took out the Harry Potter stuff and had her wandering around an unspecified area of Japan, attempting to get revenge on the people who had killed her family, who were not Death Eaters but remarkably similar. At first she had some guy from her old school as a crush, but then when the huge 'verse-mixing happened, she became a lesbian and was with Misti (their last names were just due to my lazy naming policy then). And despite all the other overpowered characters there, she was still pretty strong, being responsible for the end of a goddess and all.

Allex's legacy: In my original stuff, a race of people defined by their possession by a demon. The main character is one, and is usually having a conversation with him.

Things That Suck - Mary Sues, Part 3

More examples of my horrible post-vacation organization held me up.

Anyways.

Sailor Moon. A lot of anime Suethors have had a Sailor Senshi (or, as I knew them then, Sailor Scout), and obviously I was no exception. Once I took Misti's ridiculous abilities away from her, I had to have a Senshi in there somewhere. So I created Mysti Darasune, a.k.a. Sailor Millennium.

(Darasune is another word stolen from Kasuto, meaning star, if I remember correctly.)

She started off as an ordinary human who just happened to be the guardian of the Silver Crystal (Silver Millennium Crystal? Maboroshi no Ginzuishou? I can't remember what I called it back then). But of course, that was too boring, so for a while, she was Sailor Sun. Then I changed it to Sailor Millennium, and ran with it from there.

Eh, long story short, she gains a world of her own, has a prince from another magical world (originally named Ryoko, but was informed that said name was feminine. Quickly changed it to Ryota, which in hindsight doesn't sound much better), and has either nine or ten guardian Senshi. They all had their own backgrounds and whatnot, but the only ones I can remember now are Sailors Chrystasen and Deiasen, and only because I really liked those names.

In any case, I wasn't as into Sailor Moon then as when I wrote Misti as a Senshi, so nothing much happened with her aside from a roleplay or two with equally Sueful characters.

Mysti's legacy: Absolutely nothing.

Things That Suck - Mary Sues, Part 2

I'd just like to say that my system of not-organizing is horrible at times, but I'm too lazy to change it. Couldn't find the start of this Sue-analyzing for ages. Oh well.

This was my first character ever; the subject of the first story I ever wrote at the tender age of nine. Her name is Misti Kamiah, she was a Pokemon trainer from Johto, and this one is so ridiculous, I'd like to apologize in advance. Seriously, this is really that bad.

FULL NAME: Misti Kamiah
SPECIES: Human/Saiyajin/Sailor Senshi (told ya.)
HAIR: Blue
EYES: Blue, no pupils
MARKINGS: None
POSESSIONS: Pokemon, a necklace that allows her to transform
CONNECTIONS TO CANON: Kidnapped the female G/S/C trainer's appearance, love interest of Tracey and G/S/C rival, later was Lance and Clair's daughter
SPECIAL ABILITIES: Psychic powers, ability to talk to her Pokemon with said psychic powers, ability to get hurt a lot for no real reason?

Appearance-wise, she started out as your average Pokemon trainer. I wasn't paying attention to the clothes or the hair or anything like that when I first started, but as she was modeled after me, let's say brown eyes, brown hair, probably jeans and a t-shirt. I can't remember what happened in that first story, except that the first scene was the last fight of her challenging the Elite Four in Kanto. (Lost that old notebook, unfortunately.) In any case, the first stories were simply about the Pokemon and Misti's battles with the main characters of the show. I was nine, after all.

But fast-forward two years, and it's just snowballed out of control. At some point in those two years, whenever Pokemon Crystal came out, I stole the female character's appearance and went wild.

(For the record, my team was always Typhlosion, Pidgeot, Raichu, Ninetails, Arcanine, and Charizard. Three guess as to what my favorite type was, first two don't count.)

First off, she's a psychic. An extremely powerful psychic, not that you didn't see that coming. At some point, she was capable of flight, as well as being able to sense psychic emanations all across Kanto (or something like that). She had the affections of Tracey, who was the object of my first fangirlings. She was a far better trainer than the other main characters, and so on. Unfortunately, the wall-bangers just keep coming.

As I mentioned before, I had to pull out two of my old diaries for this, and was suitably horrified and appalled when I read this. Misti's mother, who was, until that point, the player character's mother from Gold/Silver/Crystal, was actually me. According to me (along with Frieza and Goku, who just happened to be there), I was pulled into the Pokemon world at some point, informed that I was a Saiyajin, and found a magical staff and pendant that would transform me into Sailor Sun. Later, I settled down and had a child with Lance. Oh, and Tracey was also a Saiyajin, and the son of my (real-life) best friend with Drake of the Orange League.

Yeah.

Later on, I ditched all the non-Pokemon elements and simply made her a psychic Fire-type trainer. Tracey was also dropped in favor of the second-gen rival, who I originally called Blair but eventually changed to Carai. And when I was reading, it was sort of funny how my strange sadomasochistic tendencies were already apparent at the age of eleven. Funny/scary. Whichever works. Anyways, she kept getting sick and had to be tended to a lot; later she became blind. Then when I merged all my fic-verses into one, she became a lesbian. But by that time, she was pretty much useless.

I remember my friends writing similar characters. We used to swap notebooks to have something to read on the super-long bus rides home from middle school. I should show this to them. Or else show up at their houses with the originals, grinning maniacally and saying, "Remember this?"

Misti's legacy: The aforementioned sadomasochistic tendencies. Thankfully, nothing else survived.

Things That Suck - Mary Sues

So before I went on vacation last Friday, I was wandering around the intarwebs, as we all do, and happened to run across PotterSues. And like any other fanfic author (though my stuff is dead now since I've started work on original fantasy instead), I've got my share of old shameful stories. Since I was off to my grandmother's house, where the Internet is some series of tubes frequented by pedophiles and identity thieves, I decided to take along some of my old writing journals/diaries and see just how bad it was.

And oh god, it was bad.

Since I was bored, I decided to actually analyse all my Sues and see just how much of an effect they've had on my writing nowadays. And then I decided to post them here, since I really don't have anything better to do this month.

On to the Sues!

(Edit: Decided that since this bout of Sue-searching was inspired by PotterSues, I'd use her description things to make things simpler.)

FULL NAME: Siafire Kamare Nasune
SPECIES: Hylian (eventually Hylian/Sheikah)
HAIR: Platinum blond
EYES: Blue-violet, change to red when angry or using magic
MARKINGS: Triforce marking on her right hand
POSESSIONS: The Triforce of Wisdom, a sword, a horse named Moonblossom or something like that
CONNECTIONS TO CANON: Was, at separate times, Link's love interest and Link and Zelda's daughter.
SPECIAL ABILITIES: Really powerful magic, was able to take the Triforce of Power from Ganondorf at some point.

NOTES: Siafire Kamare Nasune was probably my second Sue, but since I'm annoyingly picky about order and whatnot, she's first. I took her name from kasuto.net's Hylian dictionary, attempting to mean 'sapphire of the moon's night' or...something. Off to a good start.

So she's the princess of Hyrule for some reason; I think she was Zelda and Link's daughter if Majora's Mask never happened. Later on, when I was attempting to make things better, she was the daughter of some unnamed king and a Sheikah woman. Despite her beautiful, princessy looks, she was a tomboy and often attempted to sneak away from Hyrule Castle in Sheik-esque (read: exactly like his) disguises.

Initially, her love interest/tru wuv was Link. (But not in the same stories when he was her father. I wasn't that bad.) Then it was someone's roleplay character; the person probably got sick of her Sueness. Ugh. So after that, Sia became a warrior!Sue and I began roleplaying with a longtime friend whose character was a perfect Gary Stu to match her Mary Sue. He was the king of the Gerudo, a white-haired pretty boy who was Siafire's equal (and often her better) in magic and swordplay. And they went on grand adventures and whatnot...or they would have, if we could have gotten past the fluff.

Incidentally, the fluff was not my idea.

Siafire's legacy: When I finally came to my senses and began working on more realistic characters, I took her character (the not warrior!Sue aspect of her) and attempted to de-Sue her. Not sure how it's going, as I haven't yet had anyone read my newer stories yet. Although, the fact that I now hate the character instead of loving her unconditionally might be a sign of progress.

Lists - 5 Games That Need A Remake

So everyone's remaking old games nowadays. And if it's not a remake, then it's on Virtual Console or XBLA. But there are some that are begging for a remake in Kai's head, but no such remake or rerelease has appeared. Here are the five that would make Kai a happy, broke gamer.

- Final Fantasy VII: Yes, a lot of people are tired of the Compilation of Final Fantasy VII by now, but I still think that this would be great if they remade it for the PSP (or PS3, whichever makes you happy). Ignoring the fact that they'd make even more money, I'd just love to be able to play it again where the characters' emotions and actions are being portrayed the way Kitase and Nomura imagined them without technical limitations. (Because seriously, how many times did Cloud do that scratching his head thing?) Things are looking up, though.

- Pokemon Gold/Silver/Crystal: The 2nd Generation was, in my opinion, the best of them all. So why not remake them along with Red and Green? My only thing with Fire Red and Leaf Green, however, was the music. It's too ridiculously happy and chirpy for my tastes. Bring it down a notch and it'll all be good.

- Dragon Warrior (Quest) III: Played this back when I was about 14 for Game Boy Color, then lost it and haven't played it since. But I loved it. Maybe a rerelease for Game Boy Advance? Something!

- Golden Sun I and II: Awesome on GBA, even better for a console with updated graphics and all...? And why was Isaac only an Assist Trophy in Brawl?

- Kingdom Hearts RE: Chain of Memories: I know this is out, but it's not here. And unfortunately, Kai has no funds to mod her PS2 and import the game. Help us out a little, Squeenix!

Things That Are Awesome - Recess

Remember recess? Remember when we were all little, running around the playground screaming our lungs out without a care in the world? And the teacher would occasionally stop us and be like, 'Are y'all crazy??'

Yeah. Recess was good. So why can't we have it any more?

You can't tell me high schoolers don't need recess. You want us to behave and not be so rowdy during class? Give us a break sometime! There's lunch, sure, but most of that time (here, anyway, and there's not much time) goes to standing in line to get some food that I wouldn't give to those people living upstairs who wake me up all the time. If we had some time to let off some steam, maybe we'd be more prepared to listen.

Of course, we're supposed to be preparing for adulthood and going off to college and all. But then, if you think about it, we're being babied through school anyway. It's a little like standing on the diving board with your mother holding your hand and encouraging you, but then your mother turns into a tentacle monster and shoves you off into the deep end. And then walks off laughing. So why not just give us a little more fun time before we get dumped into the water?

(The senior part of me wants to say that once we leave high school, forget everything I said. If we didn't get it, no one does!)

World of Warcraft - Guilds

The title of this blog, Insert Random Name Here, comes from the name of my guild on World of Warcraft (Antonidas, Alliance). I started it back in September (or something) of 2007 with a couple friends from our first guild. And everything was happy and whatnot until last November. Then drama issues struck, as they always do. An officer and his girlfriend had issues and left, and life issues caught up to me just as my time ran out. A couple months later, we managed to get the guild leader changed and I stopped playing as much.

And then yesterday I hear that the guild doesn't exist anymore.

It's weird. Why do we get so involved in something that doesn't really have all that much bearing on our real lives? I like to keep my real life separate from my internet life, to the point that I think Kairiki and [real name deleted, haha] are nearly separate personalities. So when that happened, and the guild was sort of breaking (at least to me), I had to let it go.

A lot of people have berated me for just abandoning the guild like that (I did a lot of that myself), but they've done better with their new guild leader. So all the best to them; I will probably be playing my blood elf (who is hawt).

And as a side note, Insert Random Name Here came about because we didn't want a dramatic name. Also, none of us had any good ideas for names. And it stuck. And people said it was awesome, so therefore it was awesome.
